What i find missing is the north-south context. Berta was the most recent of hundreds of Hondurans assassinated and killed by State forces and State-sponsored death squads since the U.S.- and Canadian-backed military coup in 2009. Since that coup, the US and Canadian governments have been the political-economic-military lifeblood of the repressive, corrupt, undemocratic regimes in power since then. The US and Canadian governments and transnational companies and investors – in the sectors of mining; dams; tourism; producers of african palm, sugarcane, bananas, pineapples; “model cities”; maquiladora sweatshops – have the blood of Berta and hundreds more on their hands. If the US and Canada are not also held to account, and then held to transform unjust and violent relations with repressive regimes around the world, like that of Honduras, then the assassinations and killings of people like Berta and hundreds more will continue unabated along with our “profitable” business and investment opportunities.
